We are auctioning a Gavin Turk 'Found Penny' with proceeds going to Lucy Fassett's fundraising page!

We are selling on a Gavin Turk 'Found Coin', with all proceeds from the sale going to Lucy Fassett's fight against cancer (see here).

The 'Found Coin' was originally created as a gift to Momart employees and clients as part of the ongoing 'Christmas Card' series, created in 1984 by Bruce McLean and has since featured artists including Peter Blake, Tracy Emin, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas, Damien Hirst and many more.

In 2011, Gavin Turk was selected to design the 'christmas card', in which he created 'Found Coin'.

The penny, of which Turk seemingly found on the street, has been stuck to a piece of white card, with 'Gavin Turk 11' signed at the bottom.

The coin is accompanied by an A4 print out, the top of which features a photo of Turk stooping down as if to pick up an item from the ground, above a text that begins with the common rhyme: "Find a penny, pick it up, and all day you'll have good luck."

Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk was born in Guildford, Surrey in 1967. He attended the Royal College of Art, in London. In 1991, the tutors refused to give him the final degree because of his show, called Cave, which consisted of a whitewashed studio space, containing only a blue heritage plaque (of the kind normally found on historic buildings) commemorating his own presence as a sculptor which stated "Gavin Turk worked here, 1989-1991". This bestowed some instant notoriety on Turk, whose work was collected by Charles Saatchi. He has subsequently made work which questions the value and integrity of a coherent artistic identity. Turk pieces often involves his own image disguised as that of a more famous person. He has cast himself in a series of detailed life sized sculptures as different romantic heroes, including Sid Vicious, Jean-Paul Marat and the leftist revolutionary Che Guevara.

Lucy Fassett Fundraising

The monies raised from the sale of the coin will be donated to Lucy Fassett's fundraising page. Lucy is battling an aggressive form of cancer, despite having radical surgery, during which her organs were washed with chemotherapy drugs. For more information on Lucy's story, please see here.

Bidding

Bids will start at £1, and the highest bid will win the coin. On top of the money raised, Jealous will also donate £100 to Lucy Fassett's fundraising page.

To register your bid, please email info@jealousgallery.com with the reference 'Gavin Turk Found Coin Bid'. The bidding will begin at 6pm this evening (Friday 16th June)
