Jealous Print Studio has been working closely with bio-artist Sarah Craske to produce her experimental works for solo show 'Biological Hermeneutics'. The works feature a series of pages from a 300-year-old volume of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, displaying the bacteria grown within its pages from built up through its user's history.
The sweat and the droplets from an ancient sneeze that spattered one page were contributed by centuries of previous owners and readers of the book – but the blood was the artist’s own, donated bythe artist as part of the medium for cultivating the organisms.

“Biological Hermeneutics is a branch of knowledge that develops the concept of books as centres of microbial data & data transfer by discovering, identifying and re-presenting the biological information contained by the physical page. Through artistic, historical & scientific enquiry, Biological Hermeneutic scholars believe that we should move from the traditional practice of collection & taxonomy of the physical archive & propose a new system of knowledge & understanding.” Sarah Craske, 2017
About the Artist
A British artist, without category, now working at the intersection of Art, Science & Technology, Sarah is currently developing a personal transdisciplinary manifesto which she uses to govern her own practice. She is specifically interested in exploring how the concept of knowledge & data, practice & space, language & method, equipment & materials transform through transdisciplinary working & is developing her own transdiscipline – Biological Hermeneutics.
